چکیده

The ability to non-inductively drive a large fraction of the toroidal plasma current in magnetically confined plasmas is an essential requirement for steady state fusion reactors such as DEMO. Besides neutral beam injection (NBI), electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and lower hybrid wave heating (LH), ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) is a promising candidate to drive current, in particular at the high temperatures expected in fusion plasmas. In this paper, the current drive (CD) efficiencies calculated with coupled ICRF wave / CD numerical codes for the DEMO-1 design case (R0=9m, B0=6.8T, ap=2.25m) [1] are presented. It will be shown that although realistic CD efficiencies can be obtained in the usual ICRF frequency domain (20-100MHz) by shifting the dominant ion-cyclotron absorption layers to the high-field side, operation at higher frequencies (100-300MHz) has a stronger CD potential, provided the parasitic RF power absorption of the alpha particles can be minimized.

Fast-wave current drive in a toroidal plasma.

Fast-wave current drive is demonstrated in Hw Princeton ACT -I toroidal device. The fast Alfven wave, in the range of high ion-cyclotron harmonics, produced 40 A of current from 1 kW of rf power coupled into a plasma hy a fast-wave locp antenna. This wave excites a steady current by damping on the energetic tail of the electron distribution function in the same way as lower-hybrid current drive...

Fast Wave Current Drive on Diii - D

The physics of electron heating and current drive with the fast magnetosonic wave has been demonstrated on DIU-D , in reasonable agreement with theoretical modeling. Self Consistent Calculations of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating in Toroidal Plasmas

A method for self consistent calculations of ion cyclotron resonance heating has been developed. The dielectric tensor is calculated from a particle distribution function calculated with the orbit averaged Monte Carlo code fido. The tensor is then fed into the global wave code lion. The calculated wave field and power partitions are fed back into the fido code. By using two existing codes in an...

Spectral Effects on Fast Wave Core Heating and Current Drive

RF heating and current drive is an essential component in most magnetic fusion devices, including ITER. Recent results obtained with high harmonic fast wave (HHFW) heating and current drive (CD) on NSTX strongly support the hypothesis that the onset of perpendicular fast wave propagation right at or very near the launcher is a primary cause for reduced core heating efficiency at long wavelength...

Letters Lower Hybrid Wave Excitation by a Fast Wave Current Drive Antenna

Excitation of the lower hybrid wave (slow wave) using a launcher designed for fast wave excitation has been observed under conditions where neither direct excitation nor mode conversion is expected to take place. The slow wave was revealed through the presence of its resonance cone. The experiment was performed with £2j < to <€ J2e. The coupling of the fast wave into the slow wave is attributed...
